Garlock's Innovative Renovation Project Lands IMPO Cover Story

Industrial Maintenance & Plant Operation (IMPO) magazine’s September issue featured a cover story on how Garlock’s investments in renovation and sustainability efforts have paid dividends for us and for our customers. In “Style Points,” written by Anna Wells, readers learn how the team at Garlock challenged everything in our new approach to this renovation project.

As Garlock’s VP of global marketing, John Mosko, put it: “It’s a great story, because it goes from the turn of one century, to the turn of another century. It’s about a business sticking with what it knows how to do, working with the community, and finishing the job.”

Virginia Sealing Products is on the Move

One of Garlock’s top distributors, Virginia Sealing Products, moved into a new, much larger facility in October. For nearly 30 years, VSP has been exclusively focused on providing fluid sealing products to a variety of industries. The company’s approach is unique—it employs an engineering staff (including nuclear, industrial, and mechanical engineers) who help develop custom sealing solutions for customers.

“Garlock is the best possible partner in this industry,” says David Malgee, Chief Operating Officer of VSP. David’s partners include his brother, Paul Malgee, the firm’s president, and Jerry Waterland, vice president of engineering. “This move will help us grow our business in key areas, such as power generation and our rail car division.”

VSP moved its headquarters from a 20,000 square-foot facility to a 108,000 square-foot location. With the additional space, the company will add more testing labs, and increase its fabrication and manufacturing capabilities. VSP employs more than 50 professionals at three locations.

“We made the move because we see opportunities for growth,” says Paul Malgee. “I think the key to our success is that we’re focused on providing comprehensive, custom solutions—we do everything from recommendations to installation to advice on handling.”

Garlock Announces New Product Managers

Garlock Sealing Technologies recently announced three promotions within our leadership:

  • Bruce Stratton was promoted to product manager for our line of expansion joints. Bruce has worked for Garlock for six years, both in product engineering and manufacturing in our expansion joint operations. He previously served as engineering manager for a local tool and die manufacturer.

  • Tim Hurley was named senior product manager for our line of compression packing. In his new role, Tim is responsible for the global growth of the compression packing group through innovation, strategic accounts, OEMs, and the existing MRO market. Tim has been with Garlock for 24 years.

  • Chris Hicks was appointed senior product manager for our non-asbestos, high-pressure sheet gasketing, and fabricated products. Chris joined Garlock 12 years ago, and most recently served as product manager for our line of expansion joints.  He has also worked as a survey technician and product and field specialist.

Garlock Completes Second Phase of Major Modernization Project

We recently completed construction of a new facility for producing our GYLON® restructured PTFE industrial gasketing products. This facility will help us to meet growing global demand for our GYLON products, and has the potential for significant expansion. The facility also consolidates all shipping and receiving activity for our Palmyra operations.

This new plant represents the second major phase of a five-year, $30 million modernization program of our 100-year-old industrial complex. In addition to new capital equipment, the new GYLON facility incorporates a host of environmental features. These include a state-of-the art, closed-loop recovery system that allows the company to recycle and reuse process solvents and eliminate VOC emissions.

Bearings, Seals, Gaskets and Packing: Choosing the Right Sealing Solution

“Choosing the Right Sealing Solution” was the topic of a recent piece in Canadian Process Equipment & Control News. Author Mike Overment talked to Garlock expert Jim Drago about the selection process for bearings, seals, gaskets, and packing.

Jim talked about Garlock’s TAMPSS (Temperature, Application, Media, Pressure, Size, and Speed) procedure that ensures nothing is missed when gathering information during the selection process. They also discussed different solutions for different applications, and reviewed some of our recent technological advancements.
