Self-Loading MULTI-SWELL Stops Leak in Coal Pulverizer

A major utility’s coal pulverizer had an inspection port for the lubrication system that leaked continuously due to poor design and construction, combined with use of a conventional general-service sheet gasket. Even when the general-service gasket was replaced successively by other types of gaskets, they all leaked in a matter of weeks and, in some cases, days. These included two different general-service gaskets, a high-performance gasket, a corrugated metal gasket, two types of rubber gaskets, and a vegetable fiber gasket.

Garlock recommended MULTI-SWELL™ gaskets, the industry’s first self-loading general-service gasket that conforms to irregular flanges, and creates its own load when it comes into contact with oil or water, ensuring tight seals even at lower loads. The port cover has been leak-free since the installation of the MULTI-SWELL gasket!

Could Gasket Failure Cost You Millions?

For most companies, the answer is yes! That’s the focus of an article in Chem Info magazine by Garlock’s own Jim Drago. In “Causes & Costs Of Gasket Failure,” Jim notes that downtime in the average chemical processing plant has been estimated to cost $500,000 per day. That means while gaskets represent a miniscule fraction of the cost of a system, if they fail, the consequences can range from nuisance leaks to major catastrophes—resulting in millions of dollars in damage, downtime, lost production, and noncompliance penalties (not to mention injury or even death).

Jim explains that the way to prevent gasket failures is by discovering their root causes. He cites a recent analysis of 100 randomly selected failed gaskets that indicated 68 were due to insufficient load and 14 were the result of using the wrong gasket for the application. Crushing, cavitation, erosion, and other factors contributed to the failure of the rest.

Applications Engineering Training Unit to be Led by Matt Tones

Garlock has created a dedicated unit to formalize our applications engineering, training, and customer support functions. Leading the unit is Matt Tones, manager of applications engineering, who is a 15-year veteran and third-generation employee of the company.

The new unit will work with our engineering, product development, customer support, sales, and marketing departments to bring the company’s extensive knowledge base to these activities. It will also provide customers with technical support, training, failure analysis, and product recommendations.

Prior to his appointment as manager of applications engineering, Tones was product manager for Garlock’s GYLON® line of restructured PTFE gaskets. He joined the company in 1993 as a laboratory technician, and subsequently served as OEM sales correspondent. He also has nearly 10 years of experience in applications engineering with the company.

Garlock's Training Program Now Reflects Environmental Issues

In response to increased demand for varying levels of training, Garlock now offers customized, modular courses for authorized distributors, end-users, and engineering firms. Our training programs range from providing a basic understanding of various Garlock products to more in-depth “Science of Sealing” courses focusing on the proper selection and installation of sealing devices, as well as hands-on kiosks that are industry- and equipment-specific.

We’ve refocused these programs to emphasize the importance of sealing devices in meeting increasingly stringent environmental regulations, and in delivering improved operational efficiencies across a broad spectrum of industries. We’ve added a number of new engineering resources, including the Gasketing Tool CD, which contains detailed engineering data and electronic tools for calculating area, stress, and torque values.

Mike Faulkner takes over Garlock GYLON® Gasket Product Line

Garlock has named Michael Faulkner the Senior Product Manager for our GYLON® Gaskets product line.  In his new position, Mike plans to create growth opportunities for the GYLON brand, expanding into new markets both in the U.S. and abroad.

He has 20 years of experience in the industrial marketplace—he joined Garlock in 2005 as product manager for compression packing, and previously served as North American sales manager for York International Engineered Systems. Mike holds an M.B.A. degree from the University of Rochester and a B.S. from the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Mike will be responsible for our premier offering, the GYLON family of gasket and diaphragm products. This line provides excellent chemical resistance and reduces creep relaxation associated with conventional PTFE gaskets. For more on GYLON products, just click here.

Please join us in congratulating Mike on his new position!
